Terminating My Maid’s Contract. Should I Transfer Or Send Her Home?

Factors to Consider Before Making Your Final Decision

.Reasons for termination: Clearly understand the reasons why the helper’s contract is being terminated. This could range from performance issues to changes in family needs.

.Possibility of continuing employment: Evaluate whether continuing with the current helper’s employment is feasible or desirable. Consider factors such as performance, compatibility, and the helper’s willingness to address any issues.

.Costs of hiring a new helper: Understand the financial implications of hiring a new helper, including recruitment fees, training costs, and any other expenses associated with the hiring process.

.Mutual agreement on termination: Have an open and respectful discussion with the helper about the decision to terminate the employment contract. Consider her preferences and concerns, and strive to reach a mutually agreeable solution.

.Costs involved in termination and repatriation: Be aware of the costs associated with terminating the contract and repatriating the helper, including medical examinations, travel expenses, and any allowances needed for transit or domestic transport.

.Settling matters before departure: Ensure that all outstanding employment issues are resolved, including salary payments and any other agreements between you and the helper.

.Logistics of departure: Arrange for necessary travel arrangements, such as booking a direct air ticket with sufficient luggage allowance and providing assistance with airport check-in if needed.

.Compliance with immigration requirements: Make sure to follow all immigration procedures, including cancelling the work permit and providing the helper with the necessary documents for departure.

.Support services: Consider utilizing services like Greatlink Transport and Runner Service[LA1]  for assistance with transportation to the airport and other logistical support.

.Passport Validity: Ensure your helper’s passport has a minimum validity of 6 months from her departure date to comply with immigration requirements.

.Flight Arrangements: Purchase a direct air ticket to the international airport nearest to your helper’s hometown. If no direct flights are available, discuss and agree on a reasonable allowance for transit expenses, including any necessary domestic transport to her home.

.Departure Date: Coordinate with your helper to ensure her departure date is within 2 weeks after canceling her work permit.

.COVID-19 Protocols: Check with the airlines for any specific requirements due to the COVID-19 situation, such as pre-flight PCR testing. Assist your helper in meeting these requirements.

.Outstanding Employment Issues: Resolve any outstanding employment matters, including salary payments and any previous private agreements between you and your helper.

.Special Pass (S-Pass): If your helper is still in Singapore, print out a physical copy of her special pass (S-Pass) after canceling her work permit. This pass allows her to stay in Singapore until her departure date. Ensure she presents this copy to immigration when leaving.

.Security Bond: Inform your helper that the security bond will take some time to discharge after her departure.

By addressing these matters comprehensively, you can facilitate a smooth and respectful conclusion to your helper’s employment contract while ensuring her well-being and compliance with legal requirements.
